PLAY! Hong Kong Comix Touring Exhibition: Talk 3 “Zero to One: The story of Latvian comics miracle, kuš!”
21/01/2018
Exhibition Venue, 2/F, Comix Home Base
21/01/2018 3:30pm -4:30pm
The start of a project is never easy, especially not when there is no precedent to follow. Born in Switzerland, David Schilter moved to Latvia in 2006, where he could not find a single comics shop or comics publishing house. All he could find was a few translated copies of The Adventures of Tintin. He then decided to change the comics scene in Latvia by establishing an independent comics art anthology, kuš!. kuš! publishes thematic works by comics artists from around the world, including Lai Tat Tat Wing, iconic Hong Kong indie comics artist, in the issue Pages to Pages. In the course of a decade, kuš! garnered many international awards, such as “The Alternative Comics Prize” in the Angoulême International Comics Festival 2012. More recently, it was nominated “Best On-going Series” for the Broken Frontier Awards 2017. David will share his ‘way of publishing' and his view on the current independent comics publishing scene in Europe. He will also share his criteria in selecting artists for collaboration, and introduce some of his favorite comics works to Hong Kong readers. He will also make an exclusive sharing on his experience in working with Hong Kong comics artists, his views on the Hong Kong comics industry, and his future plans with kuš!.
